Sasol and the Association of Arts would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Sasol New Signatures judges, both regionally and nationally, who give of their valuable time to evaluate and select the winners from the hundreds of entries received.

Sean C Slemon

The joint winners of the Sasol New Signatures Competition 2005 were artists Elmarie Costandius from Cape Town and Sean Slemon, previously from Gauteng but now residing in New York. Sean Slemon also won the judges award.

Costandius' winning entry was titled 11 Official Languages. Slemon's work was named Maquette (the mountain premises).

The merit award winners were Brendan Cahill, Ismail Farouk, Christiaan Johannes Hattingh, Mphapho Hlasane, Nomthunzi Annett Mashalaba, Anne Celeste Nel, Mushaathama Neluheni, Jaco Siberhagen.

The winning works were selected from more than 100 final entries by adjudicators Willem Boshoff, Franci Cronjé, Teresa Lizamore, Churchill Madikida and Kathryn Smith. Independent judges Kwezi Gule and Walter Oltmann were responsible for selecting the Judges Award.

Sasol through its sponsorship of the Sasol New Signatures Competition has once again demonstrated its support of local artists and its commitment to visual arts in South Africa.
